چکیده

Performance of a simplified Quad Tiltrotor (QTR) is studied in ground effect using CFD. The rotor systems are modeled in a time averaged sense using source terms for the forces in the momentum equations. Viscous body conforming overset meshes are used to model all the solid surfaces of the vehicle. The background Cartesian grid is used to specify the far-field boundary conditions and transfer information between the various grids. Downloads on the simplified QTR aircraft components are compared with those for a simplified V-22 for identical conditions in hover. The large download seen out of ground effect is observed to disappear as either vehicle is placed closer to the ground. In fact, on the ground the QTR aircraft is observed to produce an upload. Lower power requirements are observed for the rotors on the QTR when out of ground of effect, because of the presence of wings underneath which act as ground planes. In forward flight minimal download is observed in ground effect, indicating that a flight path might be chosen to minimize the download penalty on the wings associated with QTR in hover when out of ground effect.

Performance and Design Investigation of Heavy Lift Tiltrotor with Aerodynamic Interference Effects

The aerodynamic interference effects on tiltrotor performance in cruise are investigated using comprehensive calculations, to better understand the physics and to quantify the effects on the aircraft design. Performance calculations were conducted for 146,600-lb conventional and quad tiltrotors, which are to cruise at 300 knots at 4000 ft/95 deg F condition. A parametric study was conducted to ...

Computational Investigation of the Combined Effects of Yaw, Rotation and Ground Proximity on the Aerodynamics of an Isolated Wheel

An exploratory computational investigation using RANS & URANS was carried out to understand the aerodynamics around an isolated single rotating wheel with decreasing ground proximity. The wheel was initially modelled in free air conditions, then with decreasing ground proximity and increased yaw angle with rotational speeds. Three speeds of rotation were applied to the wheel so that the effect ...

A Block Lu-sgs Implicit Dual Time-stepping Algorithm for Hybrid Dynamic Meshes

A block lower-upper symmetric Gauss-Seidel (BLU-SGS) implicit dual time-stepping method is developed for moving body problems with hybrid dynamic grids. To simulate flows over complex configurations, a hybrid grid method is adopted in this paper. Body-fitted quadrilateral (quad) grids are generated first near solid bodies. An adaptive Cartesian mesh is then generated to cover the entire computa...
